On the International World Tolerance Day, Dr Sadaqat Ali talks about, what tolerance is and what vital role it plays at an individual as well as societal level. Dr Sadaqat indicates that one of the important ingredients of tolerance is to communicate and develop good relationship with those people who differ in cast, creed, religion, gender, nationality, social status, education, ideology, physical appearance or someone with physical disability. This is also known as social intelligence, however more commonly we call it tolerance. Unfortunately in our society tolerance is surrogated with endurance which is not right. The very basic difference between the two is that, endurance is limited whereas tolerance is unlimited. Developing the skill of accepting the difference and fulfilling the criteria of respecting other is what builds tolerance. On the other end Dr. Sadaqat defines intolerance as to stop communicating with someone, not socializing or defining something as taboo, hence making it difficult to talk about. This results in counterproductive outcome.
The need is to address the point of concerns on regular basis; this brings us to the very important ingredient called ‘communication’. Communication is an art that requires learning and if we further look into it we will come across the negotiation skills. These skills carry much more importance because these are applied when stakes are high, opinions vary and emotions run strong. Dr Sadaqat Ali wrap ups the talk by highlighting the importance of respecting others with different point of view and not being judgmental towards others.
