Smoking tobacco is a physical addiction and a psychological habit. The nicotine from cigarettes provides a temporary and addictive high. At the same time, the act of smoking is ingrained as a daily ritual. Sheesha trend is also at alarming rate because it is considered as fashion trend. People are mistaken that sheesha is not so harmful; it’s as harmful as cigarettes only masked in different flavors. Cigarette smoke contains over 4,000 chemicals, including 43 known cancer-causing (carcinogenic) compounds and 400 other toxins. Nicotine is highly addictive. Smoke containing nicotine is inhaled into the lungs, and the nicotine reaches your brain in just six seconds. As a cigarette is smoked, the amount of tar inhaled into the lungs increases, and the last puff contains more than twice as much tar as the first puff. The main reason behind smoking is as a solution to stress management. If you learn how to manage your stress via modern methods, you don’t need smoking to manage your stress. To quit smoking you need to stick to one strategy at one time and work vigorously on it. While some smokers successfully quit by going cold turkey, most people do better with a plan to keep themselves on track. A good plan addresses both the short-term challenge of quitting smoking and the long-term challenge of preventing relapse. It should also be tailored to your specific needs and smoking habits. butnThis video of Dr.Sadaqat Ali contains information on “Schizophrenia”. Dr. Sadaqat Ali is a renowned addiction psychiatrist and project director of Willing Ways Pakistan.

Schizophrenia is a disease with various misconceptions. Generally, people don’t have much knowledge about schizophrenia.  Most of the people neglect early signs of this illness but there is a need to understand these signs, which includes difficulty in day-to-day functioning, isolation, poor academic performances, poor hygiene, living in imagined world, limited or no social interaction. These several signs usually go un-noticed. When these signs get severe, it leads to dysfunctional behavior and highlight the symptoms of schizophrenia. Because of severe symptoms like hallucinations or delusions and lack of awareness, people confuse this illness as spirit possession or influence of black magic. One possible reason of this confusion is that this illness targets the adults which causes trauma among family members. Families often get angry and go through the process of grief when encountered with such problem. They try every possible approach to manage this issue. 25 % individuals with this problem recover with minimum efforts because of self remission. This is a significant factor that reinforces the misconceptions about schizophrenia. Next 25 % individual face a bit of difficulties, other 25 % require extensive treatment and last 25 % encounter major difficulties even with treatment.

Scientific researchers have proven that this is a brain disorder and require a complete, bio-Psycho-social treatment. Though doctors never claim that it can be cured or it will never come back, they follow scientific approaches. People welcome their illness by not following professional’s instruction or by refusing to take medication. Science totally refuses the possession of spirits or black magic because science promotes an idea that can be proved. People resist accepting new scientific approach regarding treatment but in contrast, people accept the use of smart phones, air-planes and computers. So, there is a need to gain more knowledge and accept modern help.  To enhance your knowledge there are some other videos that can be viewed by clicking on the following links:

Dr. Sadaqat Ali talks about drug addiction in Pakistan

In this video Dr Sadaqat Ali speaks about Drug addiction in Pakistan. Dr Sadaqat Ali is a renowned addiction psychiatrist and project director of Willing Ways Pakistan.

In this video Dr Sadaqat talks about Addiction, which basically is depending on something, some substance, person or activity which is not dependable but you start depending on it. It is very obvious that lot of suffering, pain, hurt and damages come out of addiction; generally people don’t consider it as a disease, in actual it is a disease. One reason for not accepting it as a disease can be that most of the people don’t cross that line and become addicted, but yes 10-15 % people generally cross that line and fall into the criteria of addiction. When it comes to substance addiction then it is a physiological, biological, social and spiritual disease. People turn to drugs for the reason of recreation; at first they consume it for the sake of pleasure.  Addiction has something to do with metabolic error; it’s not just a matter of will. It is the defect of mind and body, it starts in the body and then it starts damaging other areas of life as well. First response of the family will be denial, when they come to know that their loved one is suffering from addiction. They just don’t want to accept the reality because this is something very painful for them.  Drug awareness is something needed to protect our children teenagers and adults as well. You should start teaching your children about drugs.

Christy-intervention

This documentary on addiction describes the story of a 24 year old girl, Cristy, who is an alcohol and meth addict. Cristy has been addicted to crystal meth for 10 years. She drinks and takes drugs for three days straight without any sleep as reported by her father. She claims when she is under the influence, she feels as if she is possessed by the devil. When Cristy was 9, her parents separated. She was devastated and her mother reported that “something snapped in her”. Cristy tried crystal meth at the age of 14. By 16, she was using meth three to four times a week. Her behavior started to change and became quite noticeable when she was in the tenth grade. At 18, her mother reported that everything spiraled out of control. At 23, Cristy received two DUIs, and lost her car, driver’s license and her sales job. She started working as a stripper. Finally, her family decided to seek help and sought the assistance of an interventionist. Her family explained to her that if she would not go to the facility for treatment, they would send her to jail. Therefore she gives in and agrees to go. She is flown to the Behavioural Health of the Palm Beaches facility. Thirty days into treatment, Cristy became so disruptive that the facility tells her to obey the rules or leave. She chooses to leave treatment and return home. Cristy’s family decided to have her arrested if she did not complete her treatment but she still refused to go. The judge offered Cristy the choice of two-year treatment or 90 days in jail. She chose jail. She relapsed six weeks after her release from jail. She is currently living with her grandfather and is still using meth and drinking.

butnThis video of Dr.Sadaqat Ali contains information on “Avoiding addiction”. Dr Sadaqat Ali is a renowned addiction psychiatrist and project director of Willing Ways Pakistan.

Dr. Sadaqat Ali opens his discussion by shedding light on the mental maps and winning traits of a person fighting addiction. Such a person should be practical, not reactive. He/she should have the right priorities in life and treat everyone equally, keeping an eye on results and outcomes. Apart from that, he/she should be a good listener, a team player, and a consistent learner.

These traits should be incorporated at earliest possible because the upcoming future is unpredictable-paced, that comprises of additional stress and dangerous addictions. When stuck in addiction, instead of resorting to home-cooked ideas, resort to professional help. Moreover, nicotine addiction shouldn’t be underestimated. Like heroin and overeating, quitting nicotine cigarettes demand no less effort.

Manipulation is an addict’s weapon. One should mentally detach from the addict and never be spell bound by the addict. Mindfulness helps in this state. Convincing efforts on the part of the addict are superficial. He/she cannot quit using willpower. Dr. Sadaqat reveals an eye-opening fact that only 4% people are successful in using willpower. Other 16% keep striving and keep relapsing. 80% don’t have willpower.

Addicts should be practically involved by assigning the tasks of researching and extracting the information on addiction hazards and default future. Plan of action and being expressive is the key to success.

Charles Duhigg – How to break bad habits?

In order to change a habit, Keep the cue, provide the same reward, insert a new routine.

[KGVID]http://videos.willingways.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/How_to_break_Habbits.mp4[/KGVID]

This video is made by Random House and is hosted by Willing Ways Video Channel. This video is about How to break bad habits.

Charles Duhigg is Newyork’s Times reporter and author. He is known for his book titled ‘The Power of Habit’, about the science of habit formation in our lives, companies and societies. He is native of New Maxico and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

In this video Charles Duhigg indicates how to break a bad habit and point outs how the habits function. Interestingly every habit works the same way. It starts with a CUE also known as trigger that makes the behavior unfold automatically. A Cue can be a certain location, time, person, emotion or some immediate preceding action. CUE than leads to ROUTINE, the behavior itself. Last part of the habit loop is REWARD which in actual is the most important part, the actual reason why the habit exists. The actual challenge in this part is figuring out what drives your habit. Studies have shown that if you can diagnose your habit you can change them whatever way you want.

Buyer beware: Dr. Sadaqat Ali talks about how to determine good from the evil?

Nobody is born intelligent though humans have the innate potential to learn through “trial and error” method.

[KGVID]http://videos.willingways.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Dr-Sadaqat-Ali-talks-about-how-to-deal-with-people-1.mp4[/KGVID]

In this video Dr. Sadaqat Ali  extensively talks about how to determine good from evil. Dr. Sadaqat Ali is a renowned addiction psychiatrist and project director of Willing Ways Pakistan .

Nobody is inborn intelligent though humans have the innate potential to learn, basic process of learning is by “trial and error” method. People make mistakes and learn from them. Unfortunately, people develop the habit to make mistakes. To avoid mistakes we have to go through the process of learning. This involves the identification of triggers which can be a person, place, situation or our emotions. Exposure to triggers leads the person towards learned behavior, by avoiding such triggers we can avoid unhealthy behaviors. Further process of learning proposes to develop insight by asking “what am I doing right?” and keep doing the right thing. Foremost thing is to create healthy relation with our own self. And in order to deal with others, suitable is to learn “refusal skill” or to say “no” so we can take care of our mental health. Our dealing with others also improves when we learn to understand non verbal language or body language. For example, crossed or folded arms represent defensiveness. But it also essential to validate the people’s body language with what they say.

People can know others before getting involve in the relation with the help of some stages. First stage is to know the person. Second gather information about that person. Observe the practical behavior of that person with others, especially with under privileged people like workers or waiters. Third stage is to know either the person is reliable or not. If he/she criticizes you, it’s an absolute no. Humans have the tendency to judge others, in doing so people must avoid stigmas. Genes play prominent role but we nurture ourselves from the environment. So there is a need to understand both factors objectively and to promote appropriate learning. It will be very helpful if people seek help from professionals or the people who are successful. To enhance your knowledge on various areas of life please click on the following links:

This video made by Love first clinical services and is hosted by Willing Ways Video Channel. This video is about how the brain of loved one’s of an addict gets affected.

Debra Jay is a well known author, lecturer and interventionist. Debra worked for the Hazelden Foundation as an inpatient addiction therapist with both men and women in primary and extended care. She also facilitated the family program and coordinated the older adult program. She has worked as an interventionist since 1996. Debra Jay speaks nationally at professional conferences, and writes a newspaper column on alcohol and drug addiction. She is a graduate of The Ohio State University.

In this video Debra Jay talks about family members and other people who have a close relationship with an addict. Debra jay talks about detaching from the problem and engaging in solution. She explains Amygdala, a little almond shaped part of the brain that resides in the primitive brain and it is where our survival instinct resides. When a family keeps on going through various issues that are really difficult on them emotionally, in such case the part of brain which responses is Amygdala. It does not ask for permission before it reacts because of the fact that its job is our survival so it acts really fast. Such that it remembers thing or sees thing that we may not see at all. Similarly living with the stress of an addict often time comes from over active Amygdala that’s been trained to react very quickly to the constant bombardment from living with addiction. As we move further in video Debra Jay talks about Prefrontal cortex. When Amygdala indicates danger it reacts very quickly then it takes longer with our conscious mind to catch up with that but when it does, real value weighs.

Not only adults but it also affects the developing brain of children who live with an addict. As the brain is developing it actually changes how the brain cells connect with one another and hence changes the structure of the brain. As a result it changes how the brain actually functions which eventually results in increased emotional issues in adulthood and can even cause psychological problems.
