In this video Dr. Sadaqat Ali talks about screen addiction. Dr. Sadaqat Ali is a renowned addiction psychiatrist and project director of Willing Ways Pakistan.

Smartphone addiction/Screen addiction is a recognized addiction now a day. It all started earlier with television which was supposed to be placed at some feasible distance, then came the desktop that reduced the distance and then came laptop bringing the screen more closely into your lap, much more easily accessible. This all doesn’t end here and came the smart phone just in your hands much more close to you. Dr. Sadaqat indicates that Smartphone addiction has taken the shape of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) which means using the cell phone from 100 – 900 times a day meaningless. Smartphone addiction is much more like gambling when the mental impulse hits and the dopamine releases, indicating the feeling of gaining pleasure.

As a solution to this addiction Dr. Sadaqat indicates that rather than utilizing your will power consider becoming more disciplined. Reduce the screen brightness to 15 from 100. Spend an equal amount of time in dark as in front of the screen to acclimatize your eyes. Switch off all screens two hours before going to bed. Place your cell phone at a distance of at least 10 feet from your bed. Later in the video Dr. Sadaqat indicates that the excessive use of cell phone shrinks the grey area of our mind which is responsible for the thinking process. Using cell phone for 100 hours increases the chances of cancer by 5% and unfortunately diabetic and heart patients have its adverse effect too. The flip side of the coin is the positive use of cell phone making life easier filled with the right sort of pleasure.

Dr. Sadaqat Ali’s expert opinion on “Alcoholism is a disease”

In this video Dr. Sadaqat Ali talks about “Alcoholism is a disease”. Dr. Sadaqat Ali is a renowned addiction psychiatrist and project director of Willing Ways Pakistan.

Alcoholism is considered to be a physiological disorder that further causes psychological and social problems. Not necessarily every user becomes an alcoholic rather only 10% of alcohol users develop this disorder.  It is very similar to diabetes, which relates to genetic codes. There are certain triggers that initiate the process of disease in the body. These triggers can be environmental or psychological. Once the addictive gene is triggered it produces a metabolic error. Because of this metabolic error, consumption of alcohol results in the production of toxic chemicals such as chloroform. Furthermore the hallmark of alcoholism is denial. Individual suffering from alcoholism may not be aware of his disease. Unfortunately, other people also perceive this disorder as merely a character flaw and see the alcoholic as a wicked person with weak will power. The truth is in total contrast to this taboo, it is a pure bio-psycho-social disorder.  Disease model of alcoholism suggests that it is a primary, progressive, chronic disease which is fatal in nature. Moreover, alcoholism generates 324 other recognizable diseases.

Suddenly quitting the alcohol leads to misery of body aches, nausea, headaches, shivering and insomnia termed as withdrawals. Another danger is to face Delirium tremens (DTs) in which individual loses the sense of reality for few days. Quitting alcohol by cold turkey method can be counterproductive. Thus, seeking help by going to rehabilitation and following a recovery program is an appropriate way.

Dr. Sadaqat Ali talks about human brain vs animal brain

[KGVID]http://videos.willingways.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Dr-Sadaqat-Ali-talks-about-Habits.mp4[/KGVID]
butnIn this video Dr. Sadaqat Ali gives his insight about human  brain vs animal brain. Dr. Sadaqat Ali is a renowned addiction psychiatrist and project director of Willing Ways Pakistan.

In this video Dr. Sadaqat Ali proposes the idea that human brain is composed of different parts and some parts of brain relates to animals. Human brain includes the brains of prey and predator’s including that of lizards, monkeys, frogs or lions. Regions of the brain that are below from the eye level are considered as animal brain while the upper part (cerebral cortex) is termed as human brain. Animal brain is reactive and instinctive in nature. It helps in human survival, people eat when they feel hungry, drink when feel thirsty, go to bed when feel sleepy while human brain operates proactively with intellect. It helps in reasoning, problem solving, making decisions and strategies. Human brain allows us to develop habits. In contrast, addictions promote the use of animal brain. When people negate their human brain, animal brain takes over and then individuals react emotionally.

In order to make our life healthy, it is important to support our human brain. Cultivating healthy habits is one way to strengthen our human brain. For example, exercise, taking appropriate sleep and diet, controlling yourself while shopping, drinking plenty of water. Deciding limits before doing anything and executing the same in all domains of life can also be very essential.

Crack Cocaine and Bath Salts Addiction: A review of the episode

The goal of an intervention is to encourage a substance abuser to seek help with his or her drug problem.

[KGVID]http://videos.willingways.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Crack-Cocaine-Bath-Salts-Addiction.mp4[/KGVID]

This episode from the TV series “Intervention” unveils devastating stories of two individuals who tragically fall prey to the claws of drug addiction. Alissa is 19 years old and she is addicted to shooting bath salts. She injects bath salts up to 20 times a day. Alissa suffers from a disturbed relationship with her step father, being molested in childhood and a boyfriend who helps her prostitute.

Terry has been addicted to crack cocaine since two years. His son explains he uses crack cocaine for up to 36 hours straight. In the last two years, Terry has spent up to $300.000 on drugs. His family is going through a major financial crisis. Terry’s past includes being placed in more than ten orphanages, sexual abuse and working for the mafia. In order to get his father’s attention, Terry’s son started using cocaine with him but instead they ended up feeding off of each other’s addictions.

With the help of the interventionists, both the families of Terry and Alissa persuade them to get the help they need. Alissa completed treatment but relapsed one week later on xanax and meth. She also continues to use marijuana. Chris has been sober since 2012. Terry relapsed but returned to treatment one month later. He has been sober since November 2012.
